Installing glass curtain walls is very different from ordinary lifting work. Large glass panels are heavy, fragile, expensive, and often need to be positioned with millimeter-level accuracy. At the same time, installation sites may have narrow entrances, limited floor space, finished floors, landscaping, or other obstacles that make traditional cranes difficult to use. This is where the YG small spider crane becomes a practical lifting solution.
Designed with a compact body, crawler or wheeled mobility, and a relatively small footprint, a spider crane can enter areas where larger cranes cannot. Once positioned, its outriggers provide stability while the boom lifts glass panels to the required installation position. However, choosing a spider crane is not simply about finding the largest lifting capacity. A 3-ton machine may be ideal for a retail storefront, while a 5-ton model can be more suitable for mid-rise curtain wall installation. For taller buildings or heavier glass units, an 8-ton model may provide the additional capacity and working reach required.
This guide explains how to match 3T, 5T, and 8T spider cranes with different glass curtain wall projects—from shops to mid-rise buildings and high-rise construction sites. Want to know more detailed product information? Contact YG now!

Why Is Glass Curtain Wall Installation So Challenging? 4 Reasons
- Glass Panels Are Heavy and Fragile. A large glass panel can weigh hundreds of kilograms or more. Workers cannot simply move it manually without increasing the risk of glass breakage, worker injury, installation delays, and material damage. Mechanical lifting provides much better control.
- Installation Requires High Positioning Accuracy. Lifting glass is only the first step. The panel must also be moved upward, sideways, forward, and backward into the correct installation position. The lifting equipment therefore needs precise control.
- Construction Sites Often Have Limited Space. Traditional mobile cranes may require considerable operating space. But curtain wall projects may have narrow entrances, small courtyards, underground areas, nearby existing buildings, landscaping, and finished pavement.
- Glass Installation Often Happens Close to Finished Structures. The machine may need to work close to buildings, walls, windows, and decorative structures. This requires careful operation and good visibility.

The Key Question: Which Tonnage Should You Choose?
A simple starting point is:
| Spider Crane Capacity | Typical Curtain Wall Scenario | Typical Project |
|---|---|---|
| 3T | Small and light glass panels | Shops, villas, low-rise buildings |
| 5T | Medium-size curtain wall units | Mid-rise commercial buildings |
| 8T | Heavy glass and greater working demands | High-rise and large commercial projects |
But remember: lifting capacity alone does not determine whether a crane is suitable. You also need to consider working radius, boom length, lifting height, glass panel weight, ground conditions, outrigger position, installation method, and required safety margin. Select the crane based on the actual lifting chart and working radius, not just the maximum rated tonnage.
When Should You Choose a 3T Model?
For small curtain wall projects, a 3-ton spider crane can provide an excellent balance between lifting capacity and compact size.
Typical applications include:
- Retail storefronts
- Small commercial buildings
- Villas
- Low-rise offices
- Small hotels
- Renovation projects
When Does a Project Need More Than 3 Tons?
As building size increases, glass units can become larger and heavier.
A 5-ton spider crane is often a better choice for:
- Mid-rise office buildings
- Shopping centers
- Hotels
- Apartment buildings
- Commercial complexes
- Large villas
When Should You Move Up to 8 Tons?
Large commercial buildings and high-rise curtain wall projects often require more powerful lifting equipment.
An 8-ton spider crane may be considered when the project involves:
- Heavy glass panels
- Large curtain wall units
- Greater lifting height
- Longer working radius
- Complex site conditions
- Large commercial structures
However, an 8T machine should never be selected only because “bigger is better.” The actual lifting chart must be checked. A machine rated at 8 tons at a short radius may have a significantly lower allowable capacity when the boom extends farther.

How Does a Spider Crane Help Install Glass Curtain Walls? 7 Steps
- Transport the Crane to the Site. Because of its compact design, the machine can be transported relatively easily compared with many larger cranes.
- Enter the Working Area. The machine moves to the designated lifting position. Its compact structure is especially useful when the site has narrow access.
- Deploy the Outriggers. Before lifting, the outriggers are extended and positioned according to the manufacturer’s instructions. This creates a stable working base.
- Connect the Glass Lifting Equipment. The glass panel is connected using suitable lifting equipment, such as an approved vacuum lifter or other compatible glass handling system. The lifting accessories must be properly rated for the load.
- Lift Slowly. The operator gradually raises the glass. Sudden movements should be avoided.
- Move the Glass into Position. The operator uses controlled crane movements to position the glass close to its installation location.
- Complete Final Positioning. The installation team guides the glass into the curtain wall frame. The crane should remain stable until the panel is properly secured.
